Mia is about to start studying at the prestigious knight school, open to both boys and girls and with a reputation of producing the best knights. Mia is sure her dream of becoming a great knight is within her grasp.
But within a few hours her dream seems further away than ever. It turns out battling monsters is the least of her concerns. Changing people’s minds is much harder! Luckily anything is possible with a good friend, grit and a healthy dose of girl power.
Mia is a story about changing perspectives and realising that one-size-fits-all, doesn’t actually fit everyone! In fact, the armour doesn’t seem to fit at all.
Rationale for the resource
"Mia is a resource for exploring equity. Its story rests on the concept of fair vs equal. If everyone has the same access to the same equipment that might be fair but is it right?
Mia can be used as a springboard into the suffragette movement, an important part of NZ history. It can also be used to explore how we fit in society and how that not only changes over time, but how people working together can advocate for change and be a powerful force in shaping their world." - Arie Paton
